This 10-week online course uses coaching / video analysis to teach the basic steps of training a MAR (missing animal response) Trailing Dog to track/trail the scent of lost dogs. Dogs suitable for this unique job are dogs that have no major fear issues, no aggression (towards dogs, cats, or humans), and that show a strong interest / excitement towards playing with other dogs. Students will follow the steps for training outlined in the book “DOG DETECTIVES: TRAIN YOUR DOG TO FIND LOST PETS” and will provide a minimum of two training videos per week. Instructor and all students (class limited to 6) will meet to debrief that week’s training and learn the following week’s assignment. Dogs that pass Level 1 training will be qualified to move up to higher levels of MAR Trailing Dog training. There are six levels involved in training a MAR Trailing dog and the process takes a minimum of 18 months to train a dog to certification level. MAR Cat Trailing Dogs are trained to scent discriminate and trail the live scent of dogs (and detect deceased dog scent) and are used (either volunteer or fee-based services) to help dog owners attempt to find their lost dogs. Lost Pet Recovery work is a growing industry and the demand for MAR Trailing Dogs is expected to increase!
