Becoming a Trainer, Choosing a Trainer

Learn more about dog trainer education programs

This page features survey responses from various dog trainer education programs. The information in it is useful for members of the public who want to learn more about the educational background of various trainers, as well as for both existing and aspiring dog trainers looking for details about the educational options available to them.

Dog Trainer Education Program Matrix

Due to the recent expansion of dog trainer education programs and certifications, APDT has compiled a matrix of current dog trainer education programs. This matrix contains information voluntarily collected from dog trainer education programs using a 50-question survey. The survey was created by APDT volunteers. It solicits information deemed important for choosing a dog trainer education program. This matrix provides valuable information for both dog trainers and members of the public.

The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) is not listed within this matrix because the CCPDT is an independent accredited certifying organization, not a dog trainer education program. The CCPDT offers the following certifications: Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA), Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge & Skills Assessed (CPDT-KSA), and Certified Behavior Consultant Canine-Knowledge Assessed (CBCC-KA). To earn CCDPT certifications, individuals must meet strict requirements, including achieving a certain minimum score in a psychometrically sound examination. Additionally, certificants are required to meet certain continuing education requirements to maintain their certification. The CCPDT is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The NCCA provides impartial, third-party validation that a program has met recognized national and international credentialing industry standards for development, implementation, and maintenance of certification programs.
Using This Matrix
Dog trainer education programs are listed vertically (in the columns) and the answers to 10 of the survey’s 50 questions are listed horizontally (in the rows). To view the entire 50-question survey for a given program, click on that program’s name.

Dog Trainers
Dog trainers looking to start their education, further their education, or search for continuing education can use this matrix to view responses to questions compiled by APDT volunteers.

Dog Guardians
For members of the public, this matrix explains dog trainer education program requirements. This information should help clarify how a given program has contributed to a dog trainer’s educational background. For example, the information provided in this matrix indicates duration of coursework and type of program (e.g., online vs. in-person).  For tips on choosing the right dog trainer, click here.
